~Review: Hiring the Player by Allie K. Adams~

When life gets you down...

Kayla Riggs is three weeks from graduation and has yet to have one college experience worthy of a memory, let alone a story to tell people later. Her BFFs make a deal with the player next door—show Kayla how to have a little fun before she settles into a life of mediocrity.

Hire a player to pick you up...

Jake Swanson only has a few weeks left as a cadet for the Bainbridge Island Fire Department before he can take his practical exams and be hired on permanently. The last thing he needs is a group of crazy women insisting he grant his cute-yet-boring neighbor three insane wishes—one for each week left of school. The only kicker is that she can’t know about the wishes or the deal is off.

When they offer him a deal he can’t refuse, he agrees to show Kayla how to have a little fun, and in turn has a lot more fun with her than he expected, or wanted. Now he must choose between keeping his word, or losing his heart.

Overall Rating:  4 Rockin’ ★★★

Kayla sees herself as a Plain Jane, just average in every way except her ability to succeed in college.  Jake is a player and likes not have commitments his only problem is that he can’t forget his one night stand with his neighbor Kayla.  Kayla can’t forget the feeling of betrayal after her one night with Jake when he acted like she was not even there.
Jake Swanson is not the type of guy a girl settles down with, and I know that.  At least not a girl like me.  I want forever, the fairytale.
When Kayla and Jake are forced to share an apartment for a month things really start to heat up.  The apartment house they were living in caught on fire and everyone had to move out and find somewhere else to live.  Jake’s Captain at the firehouse, offered a two bedroom unit on campus that he had been saving for his son.  Jake decides this might just be what he needs to improve his reputation at the firehouse.  Now all Jake needs to do is convince Kayla to be his roommate.
I have a month until graduation.  One month to get my shit together and find some way to be a grown up.  I hate the idea, but if I’m evergoing to be taken seriously, I have to start acting like it.  I could learn a few things from her.
The fun starts when her three best friends agree to pay Jake’s part of the rent if he will grant them three wishes for Kayla. They are concerned that Kayla takes everything too seriously and needs to lighten up and Jake is just the guy to pull that off.   He has to agree not to tell Kayla about their arrangement and not have any other girls for the month that he lives with her.  No problem right?
“What’s this?”  I ask as I take it.  As I read it, disbelief tightens my muscles.  My disbelief melts into anger the further down the list I go.  Is she fucking kidding me?...”A few ground rules.”  “A few? Kayla, this list goes into the double digits.  I stopped reading after ten.”
Jake cannot believe that everyone is trying to interfere in their business. First her three best friends and their three wishes and now his friend Britt.  They were only going to be together for one month.  Just until graduation and then they would both leave and go their own way.  Right then why does it bother Jake to think of Kayla with some other guy?
This conversation is not helping.  I’ve only technically lived with Kayla for one day and yet I can’t stop thinking about what it will be like when we go our separate ways.  She’s the first girl I’ve ever thought of like that.
Jake and Kayla find themselves moving more toward each other and a lasting relationship.  Will Kayla leave her past and the feelings of being inadequate and trust Jake? Can Jake prove that he wants more than just a one night stand with her?
