~Review: Razor's Edge (Afflictions #1) by Racquel Reck~

Escaping the evil man of her past…
With a tattoo gun, Shay Kelly tries to color a better future for herself and her son. When her abusive ex is paroled this proves to be a difficult task. All her clients used to be his and he’s taking them back. But that’s not the only thing he wants.

Screaming his way to the top…
No one can change the visions of Morgan Desario’s past, or what he saw the night his dad died. Marijuana helps the pain his singing can’t numb. When his heavy metal band gets signed, he’s flying high. But fame and fortune do nothing to take away the humiliation he faces every time he gets stuck in a memory.

When their morals slip and their sins collide…
They share the same lifestyle, but couldn't be more different. She's anti-drug and he's all for smoking pot. A night of passion bonds them together, but their connection is strained when their pasts are unleashed. On tour, Morgan’s sins flourish. At home, Shay's morals bend. A sharp line separates what's right and wrong that both are afraid to cross.

Will they be cut walking the Razor’s Edge?

Overall Rating:  5 Rockin’ ★★★★

This book started out with a bang and captured my interest right away! If you like tattoos and rock stars then grab this book now! It starts out getting to know Shay a tattoo artist and her son Ben who they affectionately call Duders, so cute! They have lived with domestic violence and drug abuse from Ben's father, Gary. Shay has escaped from an abusive relationship with her ex and is trying to make a life for herself and her son. You really get a feel from the author about how evil Gary is and will actually cheer when he is out of the picture no matter how temporary that absence may be. The characters become very realistic through the author's words. It makes you care about what will happen to Shay and Ben next.  This made me want to continue turning the pages until I reached the end!

When Shay meets Morgan the lead singer of a rock band that her cousin has becomes a part of you can feel the sparks fly.  Even if Shay is guarded because of her past the connection that the two experience is unmistakable. Morgan has his own demons that dominate his past and cause him to turn to drugs.  He is haunted by the death of his father and the memories that resurface periodically. The story takes many turns leaving you sad one minute and happy the next. There is a pronounced mix of drama, action, love and heartache running throughout the book. This is the first book in a series but doesn't end with a cliffhanger. From my research the next book follows secondary characters but I certainly hope to see more of Shay, Morgan and Ben in the following books!

Hero – Morgan Desario: 5 stars
Heroine –Shay Kelly: 5 stars
Steam: 5 stars
Plot: 5 stars
Cliffhanger: No

Would I recommend this book: Yes! This is an unusual romance that deals not only with a love story but also addresses social issues of drug addiction and domestic violence.  It is a touching, realistic look at life through the eyes of a survivor.

Would I recommend this author: Yes! I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read with steamy scenes and others that will make your heart stop.
