Her Perfect Mate (X-Ops #1) by Paige Tyler

When Special Forces Captain Landon Donovan is picked for an assignment with the Department of Covert Affairs, he’s stunned to find his new partner is a beautiful woman who looks like she couldn’t hurt a fly, much less take down a terrorist.

Ivy Halliwell isn’t your average covert op. Her feline DNA means she can literally bring out the claws when things get dicey. She isn’t thrilled to be paired with yet another military grunt, but Landon is different. He doesn’t think she’s a freak and he’s smokin’ hot.

Soon they find themselves facing a threat even greater than anyone imagines...and an animal magnetism impossible to ignore.

Overall Rating:  4.5 Rockin’ ★★★☆

Ivy works for a covert branch of the government that no one knows about.  It is top secret and hides a top secret…shifters live among us.  She had worked for the FBI and was recruited DCO short for Department of Covert Operations. She has had two partners and neither had worked out, because Ivy is an EVA, an Extremely Valuable Asset.  Her first partner was a pervert and had attacked her during a mission.  He tried to put all the blame on Ivy, but there was satellite proof of what he had done.  Her ex-partner made sure he poisoned others against her, so that her second partner ended up getting killed instead of working with her as a team.
She sighed.  “Dammit, Dave.  Why didn’t you just listen to me?”  She gently closed Dave’s eyes, then got to her feet to check on the Russian.  He was dead, too, shot once in the head.
Enters partner number three, Captain Landon Donovan, Special Forces A-Team Leader.  When he is pulled off a mission right as his team was moving in to neutralize the target, Landon cannot understand what is happening. He is told nothing other than he is needed in DC, ASAP.  On arrival he is taken to a secret location where the program is explained to him and also where he is to meet his new partner for training.  The head of the DCO explains that his partner has special skills and that if captured he must eliminate his partner.
“…Your partner possesses certain attributes that could prove embarrassing for our county if they were exposed.  Therefore, it’s critical that your partner never be captured.  Part of your selection involved an assessment of your ability to follow out this particular job requirement.”
Landon did not know what to expect in his new partner.  He had not expected the beautiful, exotic, petite woman that he was introduced to.  When he was told that they would be sparring and he was to take her down, he could not believe it.
Landon shook his head.  “Forget it.  I’m not going to take a swing at her, much less put her on her ass.”  He folded his arms across his chest.  “You want entertainment?  Maybe I should put you on your ass.”
Landon finds out that Ivy is more than what she appears to be.  During training he discovers that Ivy is a cat shifter and that she has some amazing skills.  He also finds himself drawn to her in a way he had never felt before for a woman.
He could control his physical attraction to Ivy, especially since he had good reason not to act on it.  What he couldn’t control was his curiosity about these special talents of hers.  His gut told him it was more than her martial arts skills.
During their time training together their relationship shifts and becomes more.  Ivy finds herself trusting Landon.  Is he really what he appears to be, a good guy?  Could he be a man that does not judge others because of their differences regardless of race, color or species?  Can she give him her trust?  Ivy explains to Landon about her special abilities and how she was pulled into DCO.  When they are sent on a mission before their training is complete, they will both have to trust each other to survive.
She was more concerned about being out in the field with Landon so soon.  If things went wrong on the op and she got compromised, would he try to help her or just carry out orders and kill her?  Heading out on a mission with that big unknown hanging over your head wasn’t a comforting thought.
Ivy and Landon complete their mission successfully and find themselves so connected that they cannot stay away from each other, even though they agree this was the only way.  If the powers that be find out about their feelings for each other, they will be separated.
“I know you’d never intentionally hurt me.” She gave him an embarrassed smile.  “Besides, it wouldn’t be an issue of you attacking me against my will.  It’d be about me not having the will to want you to stop.  In case you haven’t noticed, I’m seriously attracted to you.”  His mouth edged up.  “Ditto.  But you’re right.  We can’t let it happen again,”
Landon and Ivy will have to prove that they are a team while keeping their relationship a secret.  Everything changes when they are sent on another mission that has set up written all over it.  Will they survive? Who can they trust?

Would I recommend this book: Yes! I love the way this book introduces shifters that live normal lives without anyone knowing that they are different.  Also, the beautiful way that the main characters judge one another by the way they live and treat others and not what race or color they belong to, Love does not know prejudice.

Would I read other books by this author: Yes! I would definitely read more books by this author, she is fantastic!
