~Review: Awakened (The Belladonna Agency #2) by Virna DePaul~

Ex-soldier Barrett Miles had no idea that vampires were real—until Belladonna recruits her to serve as a covert agent and infiltrate a murderous sex ring run by the most depraved of immortals, those who feed on the purity and blood of innocents. Their latest victim: a young girl whom Barrett promised to protect. She will be sold—unless Barrett can find her first. Forced to team up with her former lover, Nick Maltese, an undercover sniper, Barrett is caught between fulfilling her personal mission and shielding her heart from the man who betrayed her.

Nick’s hunting a new breed of vampires and harboring a terrible secret when Barrett finds him. Soon a seething underworld of strange desires threatens to engulf them all. Can he save the girl and reclaim Barrett’s heart? Nick knows he has only one chance to prove himself to her as the hunt begins—and their love forces them to embrace the darkest places in their souls.

Overall Rating:  5 Rockin’ ★★★

Barrett is a member of a special agency that investigates vampires.  It had only been a few months ago that she like other humans believed that vampires were just made up bogey men and not real.  Now Barrett knew that not only were they real but that our government was turning humans into vampires and using them to counteract what they perceived as a national threat.  Barrett was presently involved in tracking down a rogue group of vampires that were operating a sex-ring and slave auction that specialized in blood slaves.  The investigation was now very personal because someone that Barrett had promised to protect had been kidnapped by this group.  Barrett had given her childhood friend Sarah a deathbed promise to take care of her daughter so nothing would stop her until she had Jane home safe.

Nick was not only a highly trained soldier but he was also a tech whiz that could do about anything with a computer.  He was also a skilled sniper and still used by the government as a contractor.  Nick had been given a kill order from the government to take out vampires as needed and that left him time to work on and develop new equipment.  He had been recruited by the FBI when his enlistment was up and told the truth about born and created vampires.  Nick had found out the FBI was using vets like his brother in their experiments and he had been forced to kill his own brother because of the rage caused by his change.  The FBI had given him a list of those that needed to be exterminated due to their violent behavior and danger to innocent citizens.

Barrett had decided that it would best to seek Nick out on his mountain.  She found herself being stalked by a turned vampire that was in the advanced stages of mental and physical deterioration.  Nick arrives in time to save her from the deranged vampire and both remember their time together and how they had parted.  Barrett has intense feelings for Nick and fears that she will not be able to stop herself from loving him and that would be disaster for both of them, some things can never be.  The protective instinct was in full force as soon as Nick laid eyes on Barrett again, they were both in denial if they thought that there wasn’t something between them.  Nick agrees to help Barrett find Jane and rescue her but it will have to be unofficial.

Nick’s top priority is to take out as many turned vampires as possible on his list and to help Barrett find her dead friends missing daughter.  Will they find each other as they search?   Who is in charge of the blood/sex-ring?  Can Nick and Barrett keep each other alive? Will they open up and tell each other about their feelings?

Would I recommend this book: Yes! This is an amazing author that really uses a unique perspective to present a vampire mystery that has it all.  This includes: intrigue, passion, love lost and then found, honor and loyalty. The book also includes some really ‘HAWT’ sex!

Would I read other books by this author: Yes! I’ve read everything by this author that I can get my (Kindle) hands on.
