Above and Beyond by Wendy L. Curtis

In the sticky, steamy jungles of Papua New Guinea, they fight for the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. They didn’t expect to have to fight for their own.

All investigative journalist Roxy Williams wanted was a hot one-night stand: quick, dirty, and completely one-off. A business transaction to ease stress, loosen tension, and allow her to get right back to her job — exposing the heart-breaking realities of people smuggling. So when all hell breaks loose in a small village on Papua New Guinea, the last person Roxy expects to see is her one-night-stand and male escort, Rob, with a boat, a beach, and an escape plan!

Rob is supposed to be long-gone from this assignment, but after their one night together, he can’t seem to let Roxy go. Using all his resources, Rob risks his job to keep track of her — and when a huge storm threatens, he goes after the sexy journalist. Now they’re together, in danger, and fighting for their lives. People smuggling is a big money industry, and the smugglers are playing for keeps.

Overall Rating:   3.5 Rockin’ ★★★☆

Roxy Williams found herself in the middle of an investigation by the authorities into a smuggling ring on a small island off the coast of Papua New Guinea.  She had initially come to a small village to do an expose on living without technology until she discovered that it was a stopping point for smuggling people into Australia.  During a twenty-four hour break to Cairns where she ordered a male escort to relieve some island stress.  Only Roxy could mess up an attempt to engage in guilt free sex with an anonymous man to find out he was not the escort she had ordered.  Even a month after she returns to the island she cannot forget her encounter with Rob.

All around the village she saw men in what looked like the local army outfits, stomping amongst the cowering people, firing their weapons into the air. They shouted orders in a native tongue and Roxy knew enough of the local dialects to understand they wanted the white woman.

With help from a friend Roxy escapes into the surrounding bush and tries to hide until help can arrive.  Unknown to Roxy the village has been under surveillance to bring down the smugglers.  Rob was part of the surveillance crew and was determined to rescue Roxy.

“Damn fool.  She better be worth it.”  “She is.”

While hiding in a mango swamp Roxy helps to deliver her friends baby.   Rob arrives and arranges to get them off the island. Her friend and grandfather are killed and Roxy is left with a baby to care for and killers to out run.

“We can’t leave Madi.   You bastard.  Go back.  Get her.  She’s my friend.  She saved my life.”  The depth of Roxy’s sobs drove a blade of sorrow through Rob’s heart.  He’d wanted hate and he knew by her eyes he had it.  “Roxy, I’m sorry.  She’s dead.”

Rob must keep Roxy safe and find out who is trying to kill her.  He will do whatever is needed to keep her and the baby safe.  Someone is betraying them and it must be someone within his unit.

He had to identify who’d tipped off the men on the island.  Had to find out if it was one of their own.

Even though he knows he cannot keep Roxy for his own his heart says differently.  Roxy wants to believe there is a way that they can be together but the past has taught her that happily ever after doesn’t happen for her.  Will they find a way?
