Vampire's Thirst (Awakening #2) by Cynthia Garner

Starting where Book 1 left off, Duncan MacDonnough has assumed leadership of the local vampire conclave and changes are being met with resistance.

Kimber Treat, the necromancer everyone (including her) blames for starting the zombie apocalypse in the first place. Duncan and Kimber are new in their love and the complications of zombies and hungry vampires puts stress on an already shaky relationship. Duncan wants to keep her safe, but Kimber still believes she can end the Outbreak. Will the cost be too great?

Overall Rating:  4.5 Rockin’ ★★★★☆

Vampires and humans are living together in a symbiotic relationship in order to survive the apocalypse. It is an uneasy time for all the survivors.  Flesh eating zombies have taken over most of the earth with only a few colonies of others and humans left.  Duncan as head of the vampire conclave is swamped with keeping everyone alive and fed.  Kimberly as his mate stands by his side as they work to eek out a life for their people. Something is changing, Kimberly and Duncan need to find out what it is.

She would not give in to the swirl of dark energy living inside her.  She couldn’t give in.  To give in would admit defeat.  Would grant dominance to the Unseen…

Kimberly feels that something is inside her trying to get out.  It is aggressive and wants to escape into the human world to wreak havoc and kill.  She wants to share what is happening with Duncan, but is afraid he will leave her.  Kimberly must figure out how to stop the apocalypse.  When two other necromancers come to the enclave, Kimberly finds out that someone else had been trying to reanimate a corpse at the same time that she was doing the same for the police.  The former vampire queen had been trying to raise her dead lover, Eduardo. Kimber had refused to try to bring him back.

“Just out of curiosity, why did Kimber refuse?”  “She said it would take too much blood, too much power, to reanimate a corpse that had been dead over a hundred years.  Also, whatever she brought back wouldn’t really be Eduardo.”

Alliances are being formed between vampire enclaves.  A corridor between enclaves is planned to allow the exchange of materials, goods and help.  Kimberly realizes that she may be expecting an unexpected gift.

Sometimes it sucked being the possible pregnant lover of a vampire during a zombie apocalypse, too.

Kimberly discovers that she can draw power from vampires and use it to destroy the zombies.  The danger is that it pulls her toward evil and she doesn’t know if she will be able to stop and control the siphoning before she kills the vampires she pulls power from. There must be a way to use this power to end the apocalypse.

“I’m so so sorry.”  She curled her fingers in fists.  “It’s this Unseen that’s inside me.  It wanted your power, your life.  We have to get it out of me, Duncan.  Before I kill someone.”

Vampires, humans and the fae must all work together to bring an end to the Unseen fueling the zombie apocalypse.  Love, friendship and loyalty will it be enough to save the others and humankind?  Will Duncan and Kimber’s baby be safe?
