Forbidden (The Soulkeepers #1) by Lori Adams

Lori Adams gives New Adult a haunting paranormal twist with the first novel of The Soulkeepers, a series that blends ancient legends and new myths with an enchanting mix of thrills, humor, and high drama.

When Sophia St. James learns that she’ll be moving from Los Angeles to a podunk town somewhere in Connecticut for her senior year of high school, she isn’t expecting an otherworldly encounter. But there is more to Haven Hurst than meets the eye: it’s home to a family of Guardian Angels, and she is the only one who can see them in spirit form. Sophia soon realizes she wants to see much more of Michael, an irresistible yet volatile Guardian who seems drawn to her too.

As Michael battles his forbidden desire for the beautiful young newcomer, one of Hell’s most notorious Demon Knights arrives. Handsome and charismatic, Dante has come to claim the reincarnated soul of his lost lover trapped in Sophia. Cursed with the demon of Persuasion living inside him, Dante will use his seductive charms to lure Sophia into a dangerous game that ends with the kiss of death—unless Michael, who has captured Sophia’s heart, can now capture her soul.

Overall Rating:   3.5 Rockin’ ★★★☆

"Michael Patronus, Guardian Angel."  "He has a serene beauty that is disarming."

"I can take being a loner.  I can take the label.  But I can't take the look of pity in his eyes."

"He knows I know something, and I'm struck with an unsettling feeling, a calm certainty that this first day will encompass all those missing elements and more.  Everything is about to change."

"I don't know what's happening, Sophia.  I just know it is happening.  You are a part of me and...I won't deny it any longer."  "For the first time in my life, I know where I belong."

Forbidden is an interesting spin on the spirit world of angels and demons.  Michael Patronus is a Guardian Angel, who's prime directive is to protect and sometimes save lives in the small town of Haven Hurst.  He and his family of angels reside and protect the town from the evils of the real and spirit world.  Michael is an enigma, the best in everything he achieves and is striving to become one of the Halos Sons, the elite army of Heaven.  His world is simple, save the lives of those he can, help deliver the souls of the ones he can't and always succeed.  Never loosing a soul to the demonic soul seekers that plague the earth.  All this changes one night while he's in spirit form at an accident and a girl sees him, actually sees him, when no one else can!  Instantly his world becomes complicated.

Sophia St. James is lost.  A senior in high school, she moves clear across the country from California to the West Coast, following her pastor father, seeking the reason for her existence.  Her mother died two years ago in a psyche ward from unexplainable events.  Sophia is trying to figure out why her mother left her so soon.  She is attempting to find her way and/or her place in the world because she just doesn't seem to fit, like she's out of place.

This was a really good story from the beginning to the end.  There were a few moments which left me feeling a little leery from the demonic overtures.  However, I was intrigued by the fresh look the story took on the heavenly realm.  Realizing that even angels are not perfect, with the greatest meaning and gift of it all being love.  I feel this story is a good read, but it left me feeling and wanting more.  I wanted more from the characters, Michael and Sophia as far as their relationship.  I would've liked for their relationship to have flourished a bit more.  Not exactly in a sexual manner.  But just in their need for each other and maybe a bit more intense earlier on.  I also wanted the story to give me more in the facts of Sophia's mother and her mysteriousness.  The end left me with so many more questions.  Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until the next book to learn more about this new heavenly couple and the mysteries that surround them...GrÄ“ta
