*part three of the sinful, seductive new series*

Overall Rating:  4.5 Rockin’ ★★★★☆

When Keely turns to Vaughn for his protection and support they find themselves growing into a strong physical as well as mental relationship.   Vaughn has sworn to destroy Ashcroft just like he had destroyed his father.  To get his revenge he must stay close to Keely but he is finding it difficult to keep her from his heart. The more time he spends with her the more deeply he feels for her.  Vaughn has to remind himself constantly to remember his father and how his life had been destroyed.

Keely knows that if Vaughn was not with her she would not be enough to do what needs to be done.  Her adoptive brother is out for her blood and will do anything to discredit her and take over as CEO.  She realizes he will try to do anything to get her out of the picture, including maybe murder.  Vaughn is there for her and he helps her focus on what needs to be done and keeps her safe.

The physical part of their relationship has never been in question, but now Keely is giving Vaughn her trust. Vaughn tries to warn her not to trust him, but he find that he cannot leave her.  When Keely stumbles on information about her father and mother relationship, she realizes that there was more to Ashcroft sending her mother away than was known.  She also found an album with pictures of another man and his family. This man’s picture had a bull’s eye circling his head and the warning that no one would be safe if the shipment is stopped.  Who was this man and who is threating her father?  What happened to the man and his family?  Her father must have cared about him and his family enough to hide them from whoever was stalking them.

Keely is just beginning to get her feet on the ground even with all the information she is having to process about the business.  Cam, her father’s second in command is working hard to fill her in with everything that she will need to run the business.  Keely just doesn’t know who she can trust even if they all seem trustworthy.  Who is trying to take over her father’s business?  Can she trust Vaughn?  What is her adoptive brother trying to do?  Will Keely and Vaughn uncover the mystery in time to save the company and each other?  Or will they be torn apart?

Excerpt:
HARBECK HALL, LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND
1815
Your absence arrives most strongly at night, conjured by dreams and a gentle sway, with only a cold sweat and a canvas blanket for company.
The more Miss Sidony Harbeck of Harbeck Hall tried to avoid trouble, the more tightly it always seemed to ensnare her.
Sidony had plenty of time to lament this paradox as she sat stranded in the boughs of a frost-brittle tree. Spindly branches snagged on the thin wool of her dress. Her throat felt raw from shouting against the wind. No one came to her rescue.
The servants would be bustling inside, unaware that she was outside at all. Her brother had gone out hunting last night—the excuse he always gave when he visited his lover, a widow the next estate over. Never mind that he always came back freshly starched without having shot anything. At least Poppet was here for company.
The gray cat mewed plaintively from her lap.
“And whose fault is this?” Sidony muttered. “Really, you just decided to go for a stroll. Twenty feet off the ground.”
The thick, rippled windows had distorted her view of the high road and the long drive leading to the hall. So she’d opened them, and while she’d been sitting on the bench, staring out, Poppet must have slipped past her. She might not have noticed, her attention firmly fixed on the horizon, but he’d started crying at the top of his little lungs.
Disconcerted and distracted, Sidony had reached for him. She’d used a branch for leverage and snap—they’d both fallen. Now she was sitting on a sturdier branch, but too far off the ground to jump and too far below the window to climb back inside. It appeared neither she nor Poppet was injured. Her bottom had ached at first, but the cold had quickly numbed her.
Across the sugar-white fields, a smudge of black suddenly appeared. It moved along the familiar road, becoming larger and smudgier.
She scowled in mortification. No. He would not find her like this. She wouldn’t let him. With a surge of determination, she clutched Poppet against her side and scooted closer to the tree trunk. She would jump, that was all. If she broke her leg, well, at least she’d be out of the tree.
She whispered a small prayer under her breath. Poppet chose that moment to dig her claws into her breast. She shrieked and lost her balance. The cat fell. Sidony did too. With a desperate lurch, she tumbled sideways and firmly enmeshed the folds of her skirt into the surrounding branches, clinging to the trunk.
Poppet landed on his feet in the snow below her. He paused and licked his foreleg—as if washing off the human scent. Then he walked demurely around the back of the house, where the cook would probably give him a bowl of warm milk.
Sidony really hated cats.
She tried to straighten, but this new position was even more precarious than the last. Burning cold beneath her legs gave the troubling implication that her skirt had ridden up in the back. Drat it all. She batted branches away from her hair until the neat upsweep drooped heavily to one side. If given the chance, she desperately promised the fickle gods of Fate, she would go inside and never, ever, think of him again.
Really.
Truly.
Except, that would be impossible, as he’d be here any minute.
A rumble from the lane drew her attention. She froze. Time for a new plan. She would remain very still until he’d gone inside. He wouldn’t notice her. Eventually, someone else would find her and help her down. Or she would freeze to death. At this point, she wasn’t picky about the outcome, as long as he didn’t see her like this.
She regretted her choice of festive green dress, which rather stood out from the winter-gray tree and grayer brick behind. Green complimented her fair complexion and hazel eyes, but this fact only made her feel worse, as if she’d been trying to impress him. She also regretted her entirely coincidental perch by her bedchamber window, as if she’d been waiting for him. Which she certainly hadn’t been doing. Never, never, never again.
Voices murmured from around the house, along with all the stomach-clenching sounds of a carriage stopping and a passenger disembarking. The soft crunch of snow grew louder. She studiously trained her gaze on the white horizon.
“Hello, Sidony.” Hale.
She chose not to look down. It seemed safer that way. “Good afternoon.”
A telling pause. “Why are you in a tree?”
“Fresh air is an important component of physical fitness and mental stability.” Or so the ladies’ magazine had reported. “You may go inside now.”
“I would very much like to go inside. It’s been a long journey. And yet, I find myself reluctant to leave you here. In this tree. Can you come down?”
“Of course I can come down. I would have to be very stupid to climb a tree that I couldn’t climb down from.”
“Yes, precisely.” Another pause. “Though it occurs to me that you might not have climbed up. Your window is open.”
“How do you know that’s my window?”
She flushed as her question brought to mind the nights he had been in her room.
“How about this?” he asked reasonably. “In the interest of my mental stability, I’ll help you down. Then if you want to climb the tree again, I won’t stop you.”
Fine, she reluctantly conceded. Better than freezing to death. Marginally. She held out her hand, wishing she’d thought to wear gloves. He was wearing them, of course, and the leather was cool and soft against her trembling fingers. She’d intended to go slowly and carefully, but as soon as he grasped her hand, he pulled. A slight tearing sound came from her dress, and then she was suspended in his arms, clinging to his neck.
She suddenly had more sympathy for Poppet’s predicament; claws would be useful about now.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
Her dress was ripped. Her hair undone. Her pride beaten and shriveled. “Perfectly well, thank you.”
“Of course you are. Sidony Harbeck always lands on her feet.”
She reminded herself it was a compliment. Hale had always liked cats.
As she looked up at him, the brilliance of his smile stopped her cold. It was a nice, handsome smile, but that wasn’t the danger. Those dimples that she had always thought of as adorable had deepened, and were now tanned…and dashing. Debonair, even. When had that happened?
He nestled her comfortably in his arms, with her head tucked beneath his chin, thankfully relieving her of the sight. Instead, she looked at Harbeck Hall, the family estate, through new eyes as they approached. What did Hale think of the new slate turrets? No doubt they looked pedestrian to a man as well travelled. The entire moors must appear plain compared to exotic lagoons or snow-capped mountains.

How do you overcome betrayal?  The betrayal of your family, the loss of your innocence to a rapist and then finally the man that you have trusted with your inner most self has kept secrets from you.  This is what Chloe finds herself facing when she opens the door at Ethan’s house and finds her worst nightmare standing there. Brandon Jacobs the man that raped her and tormented her through high school is Ethan’s step-brother.  Ethan knew and had not told her the truth and all Chloe can think of is getting away from both of them. Never seeing him again and protecting her from the damage done in the past.  She was no longer the girl that had accepted the abuse thrown her way by her family, Brandon and his friends.
Ethan believes that Chloe is the one for him but he is haunted by his part in the cover up of the rape.  His brother had convinced him that it was all a scam by her father to get money.  But now that he has met Chloe and seen the damage done to her by his brother and her family, Ethan knows that it was all a lie.  His brother is scum and he had added to his brother’s sense of entitlement by bailing him out of trouble.  How can he prove to Chloe that he will always put her first before anyone else when he has kept things from her about the past?  Even though he did not realize who Chloe was until his mother contacted him after seeing a picture of him with Chloe, he still blames himself.
Obstacles continue to be thrown at them.  For every step that they take towards each other it appears that they take five giant steps back.  How do you overcome the evil of others that just care about themselves and will do anything to win?  Can Chloe forgive Ethan the man she loves and leave the battered girl behind?  Will Ethan finally be able to hold on tight to Chloe and not let her go?  Or will the past taint what might have been for the two of them?

Overall Rating:  4.5 Rockin’ ★★★★☆

In this contemporary romance novel by Lisa N. Paul, I was unsure what to expect as this was the first book that I have read by this author.  Ms. Paul blew me away with the raw emotions that she evoked with her story.  It was well written and the flow was achingly beautiful.   It wrenched at the heart strings as I read and empathized with each character.  The two main characters Kyle and Cate are damaged souls that barely exist while they watch life passing them by.

“Let’s see what else you like.” He wrapped his large hands around her waist and pulled her flush against his groin…”

Kyle is the typical playboy with a chip on his shoulder hating the world for the hand he had been dealt as a child. He is an adrenalin seeker that uses his good looks and bad boy reputation to hide the hell that he is really trapped in. He never allows anyone to get close while wielding sex, lust, and alcohol to dull his painful past.

“That’s when I knew,” his voice was low and husky.  “I knew you were my angel sent to guide me.  You’ve come to me in my dreams.  And some night, I’ve hated it, because I never thought I’d feel you touch again. But that night, when you walked in Danny’s, everything changed, Cate”

Cate hides herself deep within a wall she has built to keep everyone out.  She does not want to feel and keeps her emotions locked tightly and never allows them to surface.  Cate seems to fade away in a group, never calling attention, hiding with people all around her keeping her broken heart safe. Her past haunts her and has left her feeling exposed and vulnerable to others until she meets him. Someone that is just as damaged and broken as she is.  These two lost and broken souls come together in a most unexpected way, during Hurricane Leo at a local bar.  His angel challenges him to fight, to feel and to break away from the past.

“Cate, baby, please, open your eyes and look at me while I make love to you.”  Those words had never before entered his mind, let alone left his mouth, yet in that moment, no words ever felt more right.

Will Cate and Kyle find the peace that they both need?   Can they come together and heal the broken pieces of their past?

Hero –Kyle Marx: 5 stars
Heroine –Cate Lockton: 5 stars
Steam: 4 stars
Plot: 4.5 stars
Cliffhanger: No

Would I recommend this book: Yes! This is a beautifully written story about two broken souls that meet and find a way to heal.  You will laugh at some parts and cry during others.  The author has a way of making the reader feel that they are part of the emotions that each character is experiencing and it helps them too  understands why sometimes you must break to breath. I thoroughly enjoyed every last page and couldn't devour it fast enough.  This is truly a must read!

Would I read other books by this author: Yes! Love this author’s books and the way she emerges her readers into the world she creates with her words. I cannot wait to read the next book perhaps it will be one of the secondary characters from this book.

“All they’d ever known was how to get things the easiest way. It wasn’t always legal, and it sure-as-shit most times wasn’t moral, but they’d been taught from a young age, that if your heart was set on something, you risked it all to get it.”

“Does it put you at risk?”

She shuffled the coffee container around and scooped two teaspoons into the mugs. “He says it does, but I haven’t seen any evidence of it.”

“I’m sure he knows what he’s talking about.”

“That’s what worries me. What if he’s right, Ben?” Her guilt surged at the concerned expression on her brother’s face.

“I can only offer advice as a brother, and that would be to stay the hell away from the guy if he puts you at risk. But –” He crossed his arms over his chest. “—I’ve done stuff that was stupid in my time, too, and I know that if you want something bad enough, nobody can advise you against it.”

“Am I suicidal for wanting to be involved in his life?”

Ben smiled. “No, Steph. You just care too much.”

“So why do I keep walking out on him?”

“Because you’re scared.”

Was she? Probably. “I guess.”

Ben sighed, and retrieved the milk from the fridge. “Do you remember what you said to me the day you got your first tattoo?”

Steph shook her head. The day was a typical memory—vivid in parts, but equally foggy in others.

“You said you didn’t want to live in fear anymore.”

She smiled. Ben was right; she had said exactly that.

“So what are you doing now?”

He held her stare, raised eyebrows and all as the reality sunk in. She was letting fear get the upper hand yet again. All of this: Pete, Cass, Ivan—she withdrew from all of them out of fear of what would come. “You’re so right. I can’t believe I let myself slide back into that.”

“Sometimes it’s hardest to see the fault in ourselves, Sis.”
