It was a spark neither one of us saw coming....
It was a love neither one of us expected...

It's a competition of wit and intelligence. Our attraction undeniable and our chemistry magnetic. Very much different in our upbringings, so naturally the odds would be stacked against any kind of romance.

I'm the rock star and she's every bit the good girl. We respect each other, but push each other’s buttons. Our friendship is unconventional, but something inside of me tells me that Lyric is my perfect fit.

It only takes one moment to change everything, one moment to turn my whole world upside down. What happens when you fall in love with your best friend? Are you prepared to handle the emotions?

She'll be the one lyric I can't shake…

Excerpt

(unedited)

I am ready to give Lyric a hard time. She’s either on her computer or on one of her phones. Yes, she has two fucking phones. One for work and one for her family. I’ll call her work phone. She’s more available from that one.

She picks up on the second ring. “What are you still doing up?” Lyric says, jokingly.

“What are you still doing up?”

“I am working. What about you?”

“Working on what?”

“Bills, my calendar, manager stuff,” she sighs. “You didn’t answer my question.”

“What question was that?”

She groans, “What are you -”

“I’m pulling your leg. I heard you,” I chuckle. I love setting off her temper. Her snappiness is adorable.

“Ha ha, mister comedian.”

“What? I’m fucking hilarious.”

“Maybe, but your language needs work.”

“You fucking love my fucking language.” She really hates when I curse. I make fun of her all the time about it. She’s involved with a bunch of guys who curse their balls off. She needs to get used to it.

“Back to my original question. What are you doing up at two in the morning? You should be sleeping.”

“Yeah. Couldn’t settle down after the show.”

“So how did you know I’d still be awake?”

“I didn’t. I took my chances.”

“Really? I bet you saw my last tweet. Don’t lie, you know you did.”

“Busted.”

“That’s what I thought.” I can tell she’s smiling, I can hear it in her voice. She is amused by our conversation and wants to have a debate.

I walk back inside the room and turn on the air conditioning. The humidity was beginning to make me sweat. “You really believe taking a break from social media would help people develop stronger relationships?” I plop myself onto the bed and rest my back against my pillows.

“Of course. I wouldn’t have tweeted it if I hadn’t thought that. If everyone took the time away from their phones more often, you would see a lot more interaction between couples, friends, family. Social media has interrupted so many lives.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“How so?”

“We’re talking, aren’t we?”

“So?” she scoffs. “It’s in the middle of the night. I’m talking about during the day, work, play, every day stuff.”

“Are you implying I’m a social media freak?” She knows I am, but so is she. She just won’t admit it.

“Those are your words not mine. And I wasn’t implying anything, but now that you bring it up - yeah, you’re a bit obsessed with Twitter and Facebook.”

“I’m only on there for the band.”

“Bull,” she clips. “What were you doing before you guys went big, huh? Before social media was even around?”

I have to think about this for a second. “Can’t remember.”

“Exactly,” she points out. “It’s taken over everyone’s lives. How sad is that?”

“It’s way the world spins these days,” I shrug. “I think social media is a fucking hoot. I love interacting with the fans, making posts about our concerts and lives. Makes it more personal for them.”

“Well, that does make sense for certain aspects. But don’t tell me you play Candy Crush? Such an absurd game.” I bet she just rolled her eyes. She does that a lot.

I have to admit, she got me on that one too. I love Candy Crush. “I play when I’m bored.”

“Oh, good grief!” she groans out.

I laugh on the other end. Lyric is overly dramatic sometimes, I have to laugh about it. “What’s wrong Charlie, did I say something wrong?”

“Shut up.”

“You like playing video games, so what’s the difference?”

“The difference is, it’s just another way to get you from socializing with others. Playing video games on the TV I get to sit there with an opponent and kick some major butt. You can’t do that with Candy Crush.”

She is not convincing me very well. “Sure you can. You can try outscoring me.” There is a pause on the other end. I’ve got her thinking about beating me on another game and that grabs her attention, yet again.

“Huh, never thought of it that way,” she mumbles.

“I got something circulating inside your head.”

“Ugh,” she groans again, “you are such a bad influence!”

I hear a ping on my phone. I look at my notifications and see Lyric has joined Candy Crush. I want to laugh so hard right now. “You’ve downloaded it, haven’t you?” trying not to laugh.

“Heck no!”

“You’re such a bad liar,” I chuckle.

“I am not lying!”

“So I just got a notification from Facebook saying you’ve started playing, because?”

I can sense the smoke coming out of her ears when she snaps at me, “Good grief, get some sleep, will you, I’ve got work to do.”

I’ll just let her sit in her puddle of regret and call it a night. “G’night, Charlie.”

“Stop calling me that.” She is so irritated with me, I can’t help but love it.

“I can’t help it. Every time you say good grief, it makes me think of Charlie Brown.”

“Good night, Slim.”

I chuckle, “Later,” and hang up. After talking with Lyric my head finally shuts down and I am ready to go to sleep.

Excerpt

What they had done felt better than any sexually charged daydream he had formulated in his head over the course of the past year. He had looked forward to taking it slow, steady and savoring every part of her again, but she had been too ambitious. Too ready. And he wanted more. Immediately gaining consciousness after their first mind-blowing round, they had taken advantage of the large bathtub well into the early morning hours. Quietly laughing to himself, he thought about the mess they had made in the bathroom before both of them finally collapsed into bed. She was worn out, no doubt, which was fine by him because he didn’t want to move. He didn’t want to have to be forced to let her out of his arms. Not yet. The thought that things could be different and that he could actually make her happy again, to protect her and shield her, had his mind running laps all morning. Was it possible that she would let him back into her life? He had taken a huge risk when he had left, pushing her away her away like he had, almost losing her completely.

Liv’s eyelashes fluttered open lightly, and she greeted him with a lazy smile, a smile that he was proud that he had put back onto her beautiful face again.

“Hey you.” She looked up at him, stretching before curling back into his side, her voice husky.

“Hey yourself,” he winked. Running his fingers through her hair, they laid in comfortable silence, and he wondered if she was replaying the last twenty-four hours inside her head just as he was.

“I guess we have to head back to reality, huh?” she whispered against his skin, goosebumps spreading across his body.

“Yeah,” he resigned, wondering exactly what that reality held for them now. “But we get to see the munchkins,” he added, smiling at the thought of the girls.

“I miss them so much.” She looked up at him and he hoped like hell that reality held with it the possibility of waking up every morning with her again, just like this.

After several close, but unsuccessful attempts at convincing Liv for another go around in the shower before they checked out, Jax refused to give her a towel when she stepped out of the shower until she promised to finish what they had started when they got home. She had been quiet while packing their bags, a reminder not to rush her. The sex had been hard and fast, but he needed to take things with her slow and easy. Still unable to shake the small pang of fear that last night had been an isolated breakthrough; that they had finally succumbed to the sexual tension that had been suffocating both of them, but that she had no intentions of letting him back into her life. That his words had finally resonated with her that he, in fact, had nearly destroyed her.

Pushing the unproductive thought aside, he carried their bags down to the lobby before grabbing them both a much needed coffee before reluctantly handing in their room keys to paradise. Pulling onto the freeway towards home, he instinctively reached for her hand, and this time she took it. Running his thumb over her knuckles, he couldn’t have imagined two days ago, when she couldn’t get far enough away from him inside the car, that now, heading home, to their home, he was holding her.

Excerpt
In a frenzy, I grab hold of the door handle, tugging at it for dear life. Suddenly, a hand appears to either side of me, palms flat against the wood. I feel the warmth of his body against my back. And while my brain fires up in anger, just about everything from the neck down fizzles with lust: muscles, veins, sinews, nerves. Shit, shit, shit. I’m in trouble. ‘Let me out!’ ‘I can’t.’ ‘I want to get out.’ ‘No you don’t.’ And that does it. Hasn’t he learned anything over the past few days? ‘Stop!’ I swing round to find myself caged in by his arms. ‘Just stop telling me what I want.’ ‘Why?’ His eyes bore into me. ‘I’ve been right so far.’ ‘Arrogant fucking arse.’ This seems just about the perfect time to give him a good hammering. Balling my fists, I hit him hard on the chest, over and over again, growling like a mad dog. Keeping his hands in place and bracing himself, he simply takes it. No gritting of teeth. No wincing in pain. I barely make an impact. I don’t seem to be making much progress here so I move on to his face, slapping it once before he grabs both of my hands, pinning them above my head. With his face close to mine, breathing unevenly, he fixes his attention on my lips. ‘Don’t you dare ...’ Before I manage to push out the final words or turn away, his mouth is on mine. And now that he’s kissing me, I should resist. But I don’t. In fact, I can’t. His lips are as smooth and warm as ever, and I cave in straight away. Kissing him back with a passion, I let his tongue twist and turn against mine, lapping up the taste of him, listening to my brain as it nags me to get a ruddy grip. Enjoying the absolute perfection of a Daniel Foster kiss, I waft it away. As ever, physical contact reduces me to a wanton hussy. A hand slides around my back, pulling me in tight as he practically devours me. At last, when he’s finally had his fill, he pulls back, waiting for me to open my eyes before he speaks. ‘Feel that, Maya? That’s attraction. The strongest fucking attraction I’ve ever felt in my life. And you feel it too.’ Releasing my hands, he runs a finger across my neck. ‘That’s why you’ll be wearing the necklace again before you step out of this door. You and me are made for each other.’

Excerpt from Chapter 1 of Ginger's Heart, a modern fairytale, by Katy Regnery. All rights reserved. Used with permission.
Just about everyone called Woodman "Woodman" except Gran and sometimes Cain. Gran insisted on calling him by his Christian name. Cain used "Josiah" and "Woodman" interchangeably with no real rhyme or reason that Ginger could follow.
"Rumor is you're gonna marry Josiah someday," said Gran, her sixty-something blue eyes merry. "But what do you say?"
Ginger giggled self-consciously, thinking about her grandmother's question, something clenching in her twelve-year-old heart as she thought about marrying sensible Woodman and abandoning her wild feelings for his cousin, Cain.
"I don't know," she said, feeling her forehead crease in confusion.
"Or maybe you're thinkin' you want to marry…Cain," said Gran softly.
Cain, with his jet black hair and ice blue eyes, appeared like a vision before her, and Ginger's heart thumped faster. The way he'd run off to see Mary-Louise Walker this afternoon made her brown eyes spitting green with jealousy. The way he swaggered made her breath catch. Woodman was so predictable, so safe in comparison.
Then again, Woodman hadn't exactly been predictable this afternoon, had he? He'd surprised her with the gift and even more with his words. His body had been hard and warm when he'd held her, the embrace awakening something new and foreign within her. Something she wasn't sure she wanted. Something that didn't feel safe and even scared her a little bit. She pulled her fingers away from the charm bracelet and faced her Gran.
"What do I do if I love them both?"
Her grandmother's eyes, which had been mostly teasing, flinched, and her mouth tilted down in a sympathetic frown, which made her face seem so serious and sober.
"Choose, dollbaby," said her Gran. "Someday you'll have to choose."
The same feeling that she'd had in the barn, when Cain had yelled, "Jump to the one you love the most, darlin'!" flared up within her—a fierce refusal to love one cousin more than the other, to give up one in lieu of the other.
Choose? Her memories skated back through a dozen years on McHuid's Farm that had always included Cain and Woodman. When they were little children, they played together, swimming buck naked in the creek and racing over the green hills and pastures in impromptu games of tag. As the boys grew up, they started working with Cain's daddy, Klaus, who was her father's right-hand man, mucking out the stables and grooming the horses. She'd run down to the barn every day after her lessons to see them, working right along beside them until they were all covered in hay, dust and barn grime.
Though the Wolframs weren't generally included in the McHuid's active social life, the Woodmans were, which meant that in addition to seeing Cain and Woodman on the farm, she also saw Woodman at every holiday and birthday party…and they always managed to slip out unseen with some smuggled sweets for Cain.
They were the Three Musketeers of McHuid's Farm and Ginger knew both boys as well as she knew herself—Cain's smirking, hot-headed, impulsive ways, and Woodman's level-headed patience, caution and kindness. Regardless of their differences, she also knew that as the only children of twin sisters, Cain and Woodman were much closer than most cousins. Genetically speaking, they were half-brothers, and while they surely liked to tease and torture each other, they wouldn't hesitate to jump into front of a train to save the other's skin either.
In Ginger's mind, she envisioned them like two halves of the same coin that she held carefully in the palm of her hand.
She loved them both desperately.
Choose?
No, her heart protested. Impossible.
"What if I can't?" she whispered, leaning back and resting her head on her grandmother's comforting shoulder.
"Then you'll lose them both," said her grandmother softly.
Ginger's shoulders fell, relaxing in surrender as she closed her eyes against the burn of tears.
"But don't let's think about that now, dollbaby," said Gran, leaning her head upon her granddaughter's, the constant tremble of her unpredictable body almost soothing to Ginger as they rocked side by side in the twilight. "You're just twelve today. You've got your whole life ahead of you."

Excerpt

There is finality to the sound of the door closing behind her. A sort of tormenting peace knowing the end has come. It’s not like I should have expected things to go on this way for long. How could they?

I stare holes in the walls as if I can still see her, the one woman I let in.

Sweeter than peach cobbler, she hardly has a bad thing to say about anybody—until now. Her parting description of me, beginning with ass and ending with hole, reverberates through my hollow heart, as I stand here rooted to my spot. I’m not even shocked, as this isn’t the first time I’ve been on the receiving end of that sentiment. I’m only surprised because I don’t think I’ve ever heard her so much as mutter a single curse word before. And the first time I do, it’s aimed squarely at me.

My hands tighten around a tumbler filled with amber liquid before I toss back its contents hoping for oblivion or something close to it. This road is so familiar. Only this time is different. I never cared like I do now. She means more to me than a quick fuck. Hadn’t I been about to tell her just that? How could things have gone wrong so fast?

Don’t be a dumbass. You can still fix this.

Instead, I stubbornly stay embedded to my spot because nothing can change the outcome. It’s a truth she and I know will haunt me until my last breath. And it’s created a wall between us I’m unable to climb … even if you gave me a damn ladder.

I’ve never been much of a risk-taker when it comes to matters of the heart. I can fill a bank account with a number having many zeros behind it from my astute choices in the market. But I can’t be a man a woman stays with. Hadn’t I warned her about that too?

Unable to see past my own shitty existence, I long for her to come back. I want to believe it’s all been some kind of mistake and I can forget what I know to be true. As the seconds continue to tick by, the inevitability that things are really over sinks in. My window of opportunity quickly closes as fast as her car door slams and the engine fires to life.

She’s so close, yet miles away. The longer I let the minutes expand between us I know distance won’t make the heart grow fonder. But maybe it’s for the best. Love, or whatever masquerades as it, just isn’t enough for the dirty, fucked up truth. Right when things were better than I ever expected, facts messed it up.

Groaning, I launch the crystal glass worth a small fortune at the door I can’t seem to force myself towards. A beautiful show of light plays off the shards as they cascade down in an explosion of fireworks. Visually, it’s what I feel inside as desolation constricts and then obliterates my chest because the best thing I ever had is gone … leaving me with only the certainty I’m meant to be with her.

I love you, I whisper for the first time and in place of goodbye. She left me and will never hear it. I can only pray we both survive what’s to come.

A.M. Hargrove

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, USA Today bestselling author, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn't do something soon, it would be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So she made a quick decision to quit her job and reinvented herself as a Naughty and Nice Romance Author.

She fancies herself all of the following: Reader, Writer, Dark Chocolate Lover, Ice Cream Worshipper, Coffee Drinker (swears the coffee, chocolate, and ice cream should be added as part of the USDA food groups), Lover of Grey Goose (and an extra dirty martini), #WalterThePuppy Lover, and if you’re ever around her for more than five minutes, you’ll find out she’s a non-stop talker.

Terri E. Laine

Many years later, she got a crazy idea to write a novel and set out to try to publish it. With over a dozen titles published under various pen names, the rest is history. Her journey has been a blessing, and a dream realized. She looks forward to many more memories to come.

#1 LAST TO KNOW

He was just a boy.
And I was just a girl.
But if that’s all there was to the story it wouldn’t be very interesting, would it?

Up and coming band Willow Creek is back in their hometown for the summer. For the drummer, Maddox Wade, this summer was meant for writing music and playing gigs.

Falling in love was not part of the plan.

One look at Emma Burke and those plans cease to matter.

Emma is quiet and guarded. She’s still hurt from her father walking out two years ago. She doesn’t want to trust Maddox, but with his dark hair, smoldering good looks, and infectious smile he’s impossible to resist.

Together Maddox and Emma embark on an unforgettable summer of adventures and first love.
Everything is perfect…or so Emma thinks.

There are things she doesn’t know, and when she finds out the truth it might shatter everything she’s built with Maddox.

No one said love was easy, and for Maddox and Emma it just might be impossible.

#2 NEVER TOO LATE

I’d never met anyone quite like Mathias Wade.
He was brooding and arrogant, but I loved him anyway.
Together we were wild and uncontained—a hurricane raging.
Then I had to leave, and words were exchanged that could never be undone.
But now I was back, and Mathias better watch out, because this bitch wasn’t finished with him.
Game. Set. Match.
All is fair in love and war, right?

Mathias Wade, the lead singer of Willow Creek, is used to getting everything he wants. Except for Remy Parker—the one that got away. Childhood friends that grew into more, Remy was the one constant in his life until she moved away. In anger, he lashed out and broke the only girl he ever loved. With temptation around every corner Mathias drowns his sorrow in women and alcohol. When the band returns to their hometown for the holidays the last thing Mathias expects is to run into Remy—but she’s back, and she’s not done with him.

Remy never forgot Mathias or the pain he caused her. When she moves back to the place she grew up to take care of her ailing grandma her heart is set on revenge. She’s determined to make Mathias fall in love with her all over again—only this time she’s going to break his heart.

But Mathias never stopped loving Remy—and she soon discovers that her feelings haven’t disappeared either.

Can two people too stubborn for their own good overcome their own demons and find the love they always deserved?
