synopsis1

Secured: free from risk of loss, safe; not likely to fail or give way, stable; to guard from danger.

This pull in my chest, the tug of my beating heart, is stronger than it's ever been. No one could ever compare to Avery. Everything about her makes me only want to experience more, the good and the bad. I'll take whatever I can get because, as I've known from the very beginning, my heart belongs to her.

Why can't she see it?

My beautiful angel, so filled with doubt and worry. I can feel her fears, but for once in my life, I feel helpless. There's nothing that I can do that convinces her, nothing that speaks to her. Why can't she see that she's more than anything I ever dreamed of, that she's perfect for me? This is enough.

Doesn't she see?

I've only ever wanted her.

***

My heart races in my chest, pounding out a rhythm all its own. There's adrenaline pumping all through my veins. It's surging into my system and making me a nervous wreck.

I've waited forever to see my SEAL again. The wait is over, but I'm filled with doubts. Insecurities are hounding me left and right, plaguing me at every turn.

What if I'm not what he remembers, not good enough?

Our time spent in each other's presence was less than a month. One month isn't nearly enough time to get to know a person, is it? My head says no, but my heart screams that I know Kreed Jones better than I know myself. He's spent eighteen long months convincing me of his love, growing my love for him with every letter, every phone call, but is it really enough?

What do we do now that he's back?

I can't be a Navy wife. I'm not strong enough, but how can I ask this selfless man to give up a dream, for me? He's so hard to read. I just want to know where we are heading, what he's thinking, am I still enough.

Am I still enough?

synopsis1
Tethered: the utmost length to which one can go; a range of allowable behavior; at the end of one's tether, i.e. at the end of one's patience or strength.

It's been two miserable months since I last set my eyes on her gorgeous face, seven months since I've heard her voice. Hearing it now, coming from those sweet lips, God, it makes me regret everything, as if I didn't already.

As if I don't torture myself for the mistakes I made. Damn it, if I could only take them back! There's nothing in this world that I wouldn't give to take them back, to undo the hurt I've caused Drew.

As if I could ever forgive myself for the pain.

As if I haven't spent every single second of my miserable fucking life missing those gorgeous, blue eyes looking at me like I'm a damned god, something to be valued and loved.

I think that's what I miss the most.

My bright eyes.

***

That face! God, Trevor Rossi haunts my dreams, my every waking second. I see him in strangers in a crowd, in the park, in the supermarket. It's been so long, a lifetime it seems, but not nearly long enough to forget. I'm not sure an eternity will make me forget the way he made me feel, cherished...adored. There's nothing in this world that I want more than him. Even now, my entire being is always drawn to that man like a compass to true north, but...

He hurt me.

He didn't fight for me. Through all the tears and anguish, the singular thing that destroys my soul is that he never even tried. Was giving up on us really so simple for him? After everything we had accomplished, how far we came, was it just a matter of walking away?

He ripped my already broken heart into a thousand shreds, stomping them against the hardwood of the club.

Despite all the wrenching pain, I want him.

My broken love.

synopsis1

Sealed: to conclude, establish, or settle definitively, excluding the possibility of reversal or loss; to decide irrevocably.

I'm leaving the naive, little girl version of myself behind in Pilot's Point, and good riddance to her. Here, I can be whoever I want, a whole new Avery far removed from the drama of that former self. This one isn't going to be afraid to take risks and go out on a limb or two. I'm done living in a self-proscribed bubble, always scared of the consequences of a poor decision.

There's so many new experiences in Baltimore, new people, new places. I'm entranced by everything here from the snow to the men. There is no shortage of hot guys in Baltimore. They say everything is bigger and better in Texas, but I must beg to disagree.

From the moment Kreed Jones touched his soft lips to my hand, his mouth is the only thing my brain wants to concentrate on. Those sweet lips that refused to kiss mine, refused to take advantage, God, I want them. I want them so badly, but...

Trevor Rossi is sexy as sin, and boy, does he ever know! He's gorgeous; that's a given. The playboy lifestyle he exudes calls to me, drawing me near the flame. I know I'll get burned, but would the end be worth one night in his arms? I am uncertain, still firmly on the fence, and after running into my professor, I'm even more confused.

Dr. James Saunders...James, as he insists...is handsome in his tailored suit, and the beautiful soul that shines behind those glasses of his, well, it's a temptation, for certain. He's off limits, and I think that's the appeal. It's wrong, oh so very, very, wrong. I just can't seem to convince my mind of it.

These three men keep looking at me like I'm a prize, not the game, and for the first time in my life, I'm free of me. I'm not standing in my way, not anymore.

Excerpt

Gripping Red’s hand tight, the two ran up the stairs, Brooke wincing each time one of the boards squeaked under the pressure of their weight.  At the top, the door was open, a fact that had Brooke’s heart jumping up her throat like it was on a damn trampoline.  Peering out, she ensured there was no one in sight before tugging Red forward.  A few steps into the carpeted foyer, the sound of voices drifted towards them.  Panicking, she pulled Red into what she thought was an empty room and shut the door.

Panting, she leaned against the door, trying to catch her breath.

“We have to hide here, Red.  I’ll check if it’s safe in a few minutes.”  When there was no reply from Red, Brooke turned her head, searching.  “Red?”  The other woman stood frozen, unmoving in the middle of the room.

“What are you—ahh…” Brooke stepped up beside Red, concerned why she was non-verbal.  The room was not empty as she had expected.  It wasn’t empty at all and the scene before them was a terrifying one.

Cots.  Rows and rows of cots and each one was occupied with a tiny infant.  Some were sleeping, wrapped in thin blankets.  Others were squirming, having come loose from their bundle.  A few were wailing, a loud sound that would make any dog in the surrounding area sit up and take notice.  How Brooke didn’t hear them, was beyond her.  The adrenaline was a roar in her ears, blocking out everything except listening for footsteps of anyone that might be approaching.  A quick count revealed twenty-four cots.  Twenty-four babies either stolen are birthed by a mother that was likely a prisoner in the same house of horrors she was trying to escape from.

Covering her mouth, Brooke supressed a scream of disgust.  Children.  Helpless infants all lined up and ready to be sold by the indescribable monster, Marcus.  An auction straight from a mother’s worst nightmare.

“Red,” she tried to get her attention.  “Red,” she said with more force.  When that still didn’t work, she reached out and lightly shook her.  The haunted, empty look in her eyes when Red finally acknowledged her, broke Brooke’s heart into a million tiny pieces.

“My sons.  My daughters…” she moved towards the cots.  “I—I have to find them.  I—I—I didn’t get to—to hold them,” she stammered, peering over the cots at the tiny faces.  Her heartbreak was written all over her face as she searched from cot to cot for her children.

Not being able to stand seeing her torment, Brooke rushed to her side, trying to tug her away. “Red, I don’t think they are here now.  These…these are infants.  As in just born, and you—” Red’s head whipped around to pin Brooke with furious eyes.

“Shut up.  You know nothin’.  My children are here.  They are here.” Tears sprang to Brooke’s eyes at the utter despair in Red’s voice.

“I really wish they were, God, Red.  But I promise you, we will make these bastards pay.  We will find your children and make sure they can never do this to any other woman,” Brooke’s promise was fierce and true.  She would shut this operation down, even if it killed her to do it.

#99Cents SALE: An Ordinary Me by Brooklyn Taylor @authorbrooklynt

Only .99 on Amazon July 3-5

Synopsis:
From the outside looking in Garrison Davis seems like every other senior in high school. On the inside though, he’s an emotional wreck promising to not love anyone. He chooses to protect himself by vowing solitude. His dad is in prison for dealing drugs; his mother is a recovering addict and an emotional mess. The only thing that brings him joy is playing the drums and that feeling of being needed by his band. It is his escape, his passion. No one gets hurt or disappointed. That is until he lays his eyes on Reese at school. She is the exact example of what he cannot let himself get involved in. He would do nothing but drag her down with him.

“I want to tell her and show her how much I love her. I had loved her from the first time I saw her smile but I can’t, I won’t. She deserves so much more than I can offer. I’m the spawn of a drug dealer and an addict. I have never let myself love another person and now… I love her so much it hurts.”

Reese Owens is the exact opposite of Garrison. Inside she’s beaming; growing up in a happy home and on the outside she was a duck out of water. Her parents are the over protective set but are finally loosening the jail bars. Sophomore year in high school, she has never dated a boy and is envious of the social life her best friend Autumn Welch has. She meets Garrison and is instantly attracted to him. He pulls away when she pushes in. A whole new world opens up to Reese and she finds herself falling into situations she can’t get herself out of. Making bad decision after bad decision, she finds out the hard way on how life is full of choices. The one thing she wants more than anything is Garrison’s attention which she doesn’t get in return.

“How is it possible to love someone and keep it quiet? Never to utter those very words knowing he doesn’t feel the same way. I finally fall in love and he only wants to be friends. He is everything I have always wanted and he keeps me at a distance making sure we don’t get too close. How can I ignore my feelings and act like I don’t have them when we are around each other? How do I resist the urge to move my lips towards his when he is talking to me?”

Garrison realizes he has to be honest with Reese and tell her how he really feels before he loses her for good. Just maybe, he will get love in return for the first time in his life. When he finally convinces himself to come forth, a life changing event occurs that could take away the only person in his life that truly loves him.
Is it too late? Does he get the chance to tell her? And when he confesses does it matter?

I caught the scent again and looked in her direction, as if I could see the smell’s source. It could have come from anyone. It could have been the gorgeous black lady with the sweet smile. It could have been the plate of saucy meat that crossed my path. Could have been the waft of parking lot that came through the door before it snapped closed.
But it wasn’t.
I knew it like I knew tax code; it was him. The man in the dark suit and thin pink tie, the full lips and two-day beard. His eyes were black as a felony, and they stayed on me as his body swung into the booth.
The smell had come from him, not the other man getting into the booth. It was in his gaze, which was locked on me, disarming me. He was beautiful to me. Not my type, not at all. But the slight cleft in his chin, the powerful jaw, the swoop of dark hair falling over his forehead seemed right. Just right. I swallowed. My mouth had started watering, and my throat had gotten dry. I got a flash of him above me, with that swoop of hair rocking, as he fucked me so hard the sheets ripped.
He turned to say something to the hostess, and I took a gulp of air. I’d forgotten to breathe. I put my hands to my shirt buttons to make sure they were fastened, because I felt as if he’d undressed me.

Meet CD Reiss!
cd reiss bio.jpg

CD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did embed TV story structure in her head well enough for her to take a big risk on a TV series structured erotic series called Songs of Submission. It’s about a kinky billionaire hung up on his ex-wife, an ingenue singer with a wisecracking mouth; art, music and sin in the city of Los Angeles.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to give the toilets a once-over every couple of weeks or chop a cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Review of Valan's Bondmate (Zarronian Warriors Book 1) by Mardi Maxwell @MardiMaxwellRom

A Warrior with a Grudge…
At thirty-one Valan Erikson is a fierce and relentless warrior. He's never lost a battle but he's losing the war with the mating fever raging in his body. He's accepted that his death is imminent until he's told a compatible race of females has been found. When he discovers they're Wrothian he refuses to take one as a mate until the Council threatens to strip him of his warrior status and let him die in dishonor.

A Female Who Wants to Escape Her Fate…
Lia ad-San's Wrothian sire has arranged to trade her to, Gorm ad-Jai, a man she despises. Before she can escape she's abducted by a fierce warrior. Unaware that her sire caused the deaths of the Zarronian females, including Valan's mother and twin sister, she reveals her identity and demands to be freed.

A Complication They Didn't Expect…
Enraged to be bonded to the daughter of his most hated enemy, Valan treats Lia as a prisoner rather than a beloved bondmate. When the Zarronians learn her identity they demand she be punished for her sire's war crimes. Valan realizes too late that he's endangered his mate's life. The fever they share will keep them together but only love can make them want each other.

Overall Rating:  3 Rockin’ ★★★

A dying race of warriors searching the universe for compatible bondmates, I'm not sure what I was expecting when I purchased Valan's Bondmate by Mardi Maxwell, but what I read surely wasn't it.  This science fiction romance has its own definitions and the beginning paints the picture of the history between the Wrothians and Zarronian warrior races. It’s brutal and unsettling at times, but this allows the reader to understand the storyline.  The battle for dominance and survival is prevalent between the two races.  When a chemical weapon kills the females of the Zarronian race, it causes them to seek female bondmates for their dying race elsewhere.  They find that they must look towards their enemy, the Wrothians, who are genetically capable of carrying their young.  This is Valan and Lia's journey and the first book in the series.

Valan is commander of the Invisible and from the royal bloodline.  His mother and twin sister were murdered during the war with the Wrothians and his vengeance knows no limits even for his bondmate, Lia.  She was stolen from her bed during the raid to serve as Valan's mate.  Left with no choice but to obey or face punishment, she learns to survive in the new world thrust upon her.

At times this book seemed one-sided, total male dominance over females, and it was disconcerting, but even as the heroine seemed to have no control over her future she learned a way around the tough and strict rules set before her.  Her cunning ability to adapt developed the plot and the rising of a new era to begin.

Synopsis

Cammie Laroux is back in Alabama---again.

Dragged back to her small town to help her mother recover from surgery while rescuing the family event planning business should be a cinch. Even for a disgraced television chef, right?  Wrong.

Excerpt

“Why, Cammie, can’t nobody say you forgot how to two-step, and that’s a fact,” her dance partner, Lloyd, a former high school classmate, remarked as they whirled around the scuffed wooden floor. He’d been one of several familiar faces she’d come across since they’d arrived.

She’d given up, and given in. “Thanks, Lloyd, I’d forgotten how much fun this is. I don’t think anyone could forget how to two-step. It’s so easy.” The name of the dance itself should clue one in to the simplicity.

“Aw, Cammie, it’s just ’cause you such a natural. Not everybody can do it like this, you know?”

She glanced around, realizing in about a second that, indeed, there were less than capable two-steppers all around. “I guess I’d never really thought about it.”

The song ended much too quickly. Not because she couldn’t bear to part company with Lloyd, though he was a handsome fellow and a good dancer, but because she was truly enjoying herself. Approaching the rather large table where her sisters and brother had taken on several others, she noticed a little ripple of shifting eyeballs. “What’s going on?”

Ignoring her, Emma said, “You sure were cuttin’ a rug out there with Lloyd, girl. Whoa, I haven’t seen you dance like that in years.” She smiled brightly.

Cammie crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes at them, then repeated, “What’s going on?”

“Might as well tell her. She’s bound to hear it in here or see for herself,” Maeve said.

“Tell me what?”

Jo Jo stood, linked arms with her, and began leading her in the direction of the small bar over in a far corner. Just before they came too close, she pointed through the throng. Cammie followed her sister’s line of vision and she spotted Grey sitting alone at the bar.

He was sipping a longneck and appeared to be brooding. Nothing like the hottest guy in the bar sitting there like he was waiting for her. Well, hell. She couldn’t very well go back to having a good time with her people without at least saying hello, could she? It didn’t seem very nice, especially since he appeared fairly miserable hanging there by himself. Maybe she would wait a little while and then come back—

At that moment, his head snapped up and he caught her staring through the crowd. Her feet instantly became blocks of cement, and utterly unmovable. Crap.

He smiled then and raised his beer in salute to her, slapped a bill on the bar, nodded to the bartender. Within a half a second he was closing the distance between them without breaking eye contact with Cammie. She tried again to move, feet still frozen, rooted to the floor.

She straightened her shoulders, realizing a getaway wasn’t happening at this point. The intensity with which he bore down was intimidating, but maybe she’d asked for it with her surprised expression he’d caught her casting in his direction.

“Cammie,” he murmured into her ear, his breath warm, his firm but gentle grip seared her bare upper arm, calloused fingers directed her to a less visible spot away from her family and interested onlookers.

What the hell was her problem, anyway? She had a fiancée. And she and Grey had been in near contact for these past weeks without major incident. Why should this moment be any different? She allowed herself to be maneuvered to a more private area.

He was only slightly manhandling her, but she wasn’t sure she didn’t like it—just a little.

Grey stopped as they reached a small area where a few couples danced in a darker corner, seemingly unaware of anyone else. The bar was laid out like an octopus with four arms, with several small bars and dance floors stretching out like appendages from the main area. Cammie and Grey stood toe-to-toe as an old, slow George Strait song began. Before she realized what was happening, she was wrapped in his muscular arms, breasts pressed against his chest, swaying softly to their song.

She’d consumed a couple of longnecks, resulting in a lovely tingly sensation. Combined with the soulful country ballad playing, reminiscent from their dating years, perhaps it was no wonder she was experiencing more than a little emotional and physical sizzle of electricity. Considering she’d always been wildly attracted to Grey, she might want to rein herself in. She inhaled the scent of him, closed her eyes, and fell back in time.

Dear Lord. Why did he make her feel like this? What was it about him that caused the young girl who’d loved and trusted him with her whole heart to take over without a even a struggle from older, smarter her who’d thrown in the towel the moment they’d locked eyes?

At this particular moment, she couldn’t think, only feel and remember what it’d been like with Grey.
