There ain't a rider that can't be thrown. And large-animal veterinarian Regan O'Connelli was thrown hard when he discovered his fiancée with his best friend. Now he's starting his life over at the Last Chance Ranch, run by the tightly knit Chance clan. But damned if his libido hasn't perked up over the spirited redhead who looks a lot like trouble.
Lily King is the queen of anti-structure. Turns out, that makes running a horse sanctuary a challenge. Regan's help is exactly what Lily needs, not to mention the seriously sexy sparks that are flying between them. Now she just has to convince this fallen cowboy to dust himself off and get back in the saddle and into her bed!
Overall Rating: 3 Rockin’ ★★★
Regan O’Connelli was a DVM and had agreed to help out at the Peaceful Kingdom Horse Sanctuary. He had no idea of what he was getting into but had promised his partner Nick Chance that he would take over his volunteer position at the sanctuary. When he drove up to the gate he got his first idea of what he had gotten himself into.
Nick Chance, his brother-in-law and business partner, had mentioned that Lily King was slightly…different. Judging from the psychedelic colors she’d painted the ranch house, the barn and the outbuildings, differentwas an understatement. Even though he was wearing his Ray-Ban sunglasses, the neon green, pink, orange and turquoise hurt his eyes.
While Regan was trying to find out why a man was dropping off a potbellied pig at a horse sanctuary he heard a voice saying I’ll take it. Nothing had prepared him for Lily King and the fact that he found himself on instant alert.
“Right.” At her approach, his senses went on alert. She smelled great, like a fresh meadow, and as she drew nearer, he noticed the freckles scattered across her nose, as well as her intensely blue eyes fringed with pale lashes.
Regan knows that Lily needs help when he sees the horses wandering around the yard with no set structure for their behavior. She also had adopted chickens and another potbellied pig. When Lily explains to him that she just can’t turn anyone away he begins to understand her problem. Lily has a kind heart that wants to help everyone, and it seems that includes him.
“I could be wrong, Buck, old boy, but I think that guy might need to be rescued as much as the rest of you around here.” The horse bobbed his head, and Lily smiled. “Thanks for validating my hypothesis.”
Lily calls her friend Nick Chance to get the details about his new partner Regan. When she finds out that he had just broken his engagement six months ago red flags go up warning her that she will not be another man’s rebound woman. Even with Nick’s assurances that he will be ok in time.
“How could he be? Poor thing. It’s only been six months.” That meant he was off-limits to her, though. She had no interest in some gorgeous guy’s rebound girl, even if she did want to soothe his wounded heart.
While feeding the horses the alpha male begins to show his dominance over the other horses. Lily realizes that she is not equipped to take care of the animals at sanctuary alone. She needs Regan to help her gets things under control so she asks him to stay the weekend at her house and teach her what she needs to know to help the animals.
“I have a better idea.” It wasn’t a wise idea, but desperate times called for desperate measures. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but would you be willing to spend the weekend with me?”
Regan agrees to stay and help Lily with training the animals and getting things organized at the sanctuary. They are both attracted to each other and only Regan’s and Lily’s past stand in the way of them both getting what they want, each other.
“But, inconveniently for you, I flip your switches.” She sighed. “You do.” “That makes two of us with that problem. But considering where we’re both coming from, it could turn into a disaster. I wasn’t willing to admit that before, but it’s possible one or both of us could get hurt.”
Will Regan and Lily save the sanctuary and find a way to each other? Or will their past keep them from the love that is beginning to grow?
