Fast Track (Buchanan-Renard #12) by Julie Garwood

A corrupt congressman, a mother’s secrets, and a sizzling romance ignite passion and suspense in the new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood.

Cordelia Kane has always been a daddy’s girl—her father raised her alone after her mother died in a car crash when Cordelia was just two years old. So when he has a serious heart attack, Cordelia is devastated, and the emotion is only intensified by the confusion she feels when he reveals the shocking truth about her mother.

Cordelia can’t suppress her curiosity about the woman who gave birth to her, and when she discovers the answers to her questions lie in Sydney, Australia, she travels there to get them.

Hotel magnate Aiden Madison is Cordelia’s best friend’s older brother. He’s oblivious to the fact that she’s had a crush on him for years. When he gets railroaded into taking her along to Sydney on his company jet, he unknowingly puts her life at risk. He’s recently angered a powerful congressman by refusing to purchase overvalued land. Congressman Chambers is not a man to let such an offense slide, and he has the resources to get even and to get what he wants.

In Australia sparks are flying between Cordelia and Aiden, but multiple attempts on Aiden’s life are made while Cordelia is with him, and he realizes he must put a stop to the madness before he loses the thing he values most.

Overall Rating:  4 Rockin’ ★★★★

When Cordie was five years old she met her best friends, Sophie Rose and Regan Madison.  From the first day of kindergarten the girls formed a friendship that would last all of their lives.  Cordie also meets her Prince Charming, Regan’s oldest brother Aiden. Aiden is twelve years older than Cordie but it doesn’t matter to her, she still believes that he is the one even if only sees her as another little sister.

“The tree friends couldn’t be more different-acquaintances usually categorized Sophie as the uninhibited one, Reagan as the sensitive one, and Cordie as the scholarly and practical one-yet when they were together, they were an unshakeable unit.

Cordie’s father builds an incredible automotive business and has just sold his business for millions to retire and take things easy.  He was helping in the automotive shop at the high school that Cordie worked at as a teacher. The school worked with at risk students and her father had become a mentor to many of the boys.  On his deathbed Cordie’s father confesses that her mother did not die but left them and is still alive.  As Cordie watched the life leave her father she realized that life is too short to wait for someone that would never see her as anything but a little sister.

Her eyes were open now.  Her father’s confession opened them.  She had never been in love with Aiden; it had been a foolish crush.  That was all.  Fortunately for her the man was clueless.

Regan sends Aiden to check on Cordie to make sure that she is ok and they exchange their first kiss.  The kiss is everything that she could have wanted but she knows that it really upsets Aiden when he leaves as fast as possible.  She knows that she cannot face Aiden and needs to move on with her life so she purchases a condo in Boston and decides that she can start a new life there.  Cordie also decides that she will try to find her missing mother and confront her about why she left her.  Jack and Alec her best friends’ husbands and FBI agents tell her that they will help her look for her mother.  She finds out that her mother had married her dad under a false name and that is why they were having problems finding her.  Aiden tells her that he will go with her to Australia and help her find her mother.  He also starts exhibiting a possessive attitude toward Cordie. Aiden has an invitation to a ball that her mother will be attending and makes arrangements for her to go with him.

“Oh hell, he had it bad tonight.  He hadn’t slept in over twenty-four hours, and that was probably why he was having so much trouble controlling his reaction to her.  That and the fact that every time he looked at her he remembered how she’d responded when he’d kissed her, how her scent had aroused him, how she’d tasted, and how she’d felt in his arms.

Will Aiden be able to change Cordie’s plans for her future that does not include him?  Did he wait too long to realize how he felt toward her?  Can Aiden protect her from the past that is fast approaching?
