~Review: The Arrow (Highland Guard #9) by Monica McCarty~

As King Robert the Bruce of Scotland plots to retake his English occupied castles, he needs the stealth and skill of his elite soldiers, the Highland Guard. Fearless and indomitable, no men are more loyal to their king, or cherished by the women they love.

The talents of legendary marksman Gregor “Arrow” MacGregor are crucial now, as Bruce moves to reclaim his Scottish holdings. Gregor is considered the most handsome man in Scotland, and his fame as an archer is rivaled only by his reputation with the lasses as a heartbreaker. But when his infamous face is exposed during a covert mission, Gregor is forced to lay low. He returns home only to find a new battle waiting: a daring game of seduction involving his now very grown up and very desirable ward, Cate of Lochmaben.

A born fighter, Cate was clinging to life when Gregor rescued her after a vicious English raid on her village left her mother dead. But five years later, the once scrappy orphan Gregor took under his protection has become a woman. Brave, strong, and skilled in warfare, Cate is determined to lay claim to the warrior who refuses to be trapped. The heat in his eyes tells her she has his attention . . . and his desire. But will Gregor allow his heart to surrender before danger finds them, and the truth of Cate’s identity is revealed?

Overall Rating:  4 Rockin’ ★★★★

Cate has watch her village been burned to the ground, and her friends and neighbors killed by the English.  Her pregnant mother raped then murdered in front of her then she was thrown into a well so that she would die slowly and painfully. When she had given up on being rescued and realized that death was waiting for her, she hears voices.  Cate wonders if it is the English coming back to finish the job and she almost feels relief at the thought.  When she sees her rescuer she thinks that she has died and gone to heaven because surely anyone that looks as perfect as he does must be an Angel.

Five years later Gregor finds himself questioning himself and his abilities to perform his duty as an elite Highland Guard.  He never missed with his arrows but something is not right, he is hesitating and hesitation cause the loss of lives.  And then it happens he doesn’t take out a dog in the middle of a stealth attach on one of the most important castles in their fight to reclaim the throne for The Bruce.  One disaster after another follows Gregor and finally the King tells him to stay out of site until after Christmas when he will need him to help take Perth.  Gregor feels shame that he has let his king down in his fight against the English.  He realizes that he is needed at home when he receives a missive from his bother telling him there is an emergency at home and he needs him immediately.  If he was laying a wager the emergency would have something to do with the wee lass that he had rescued all those years ago.  She was always causing problems of some kind or another and he was starting to feel uncomfortable with her adoration toward him.  He needed to find her a husband that would solve his problems.

What he didn’t expect was the attraction he now finds he has whenever she is around.  It just made him all the more set on finding her a husband as quickly as he could.  Gregor also has to deal with the children that Cate tells him are his, two boys and a girl.  He knows that they are not his and refuses to claim them and he will not be claiming Cate regardless of how much he wanted her.  Cate has wanted Gregor since the first time she laid eyes on him when he rescued her and she was determined to have him.  She would be patient and wait for him to see how much he needed her and the children after all, all good things come to those that wait. Finally Gregor gives Cate her first kiss and the heat that overwhelms them both is explosive and all consuming.

Cate must convince Gregor that he is a one-woman-man and that she is that woman.  Gregor must let go of his past hatred of himself and his belief that he was responsible for the death of his older brother.  The war is raging and betrayal is running rampant throughout the countryside.  What secrets are Cate and Gregor keeping from each other?
