Review of The Last True Vampire (True Vampire #1) by Kate Baxter

As Michael’s eyes lit on a female not twenty feet away, he knew without a doubt that it was her blood that called to him and her scent that had awakened him. This female had tethered his soul and returned it to him.

Soul Survivor

He is the last of his race. The one true king of the vampires. Michael Aristov roams the nightclubs of L.A. after dark, haunted by his past and driven by his hunger. The last of the Ancient Ones, he alone has survived the destruction of his race at the hands of the slayers. Now he is forced to hunt and feed like a common vampire, a creature of lust. Nothing in this world can fulfill his needs…until he meets a woman who’s everything he’s ever wanted. And more.

Sweet Salvation

Her name is Claire Thompson. Her blood is so sweet, so intoxicating—the smell alone draws Michael to her like a moth to the flame. Sly, sexy, and seductive, Claire seems to be the only mortal who can satisfy his craving and seal his fate…forever. Can she be trusted? From their very first kiss, the last true vampire sweeps Claire into a world in which darkness rules desire—and where falling in love is the greatest danger of all…

Overall Rating:  4.25 Rockin’ ★★★★
The Last True Vampire by Kate Baxter is the first book in her electrifying new series.  It takes a unique spin on vampire folklore and uses present day Hollywood, California as the background for this exceptional novel.  Mikhail Aristov is the last ancient one of his kind since the slaughtering of his people. He was left encased in a tomb for over a hundred years by the Sortiari, a secret assassins/enforcers of the Fates.  Since then he has roamed the world alone for the past few centuries.  As the king of the vampires and the last of his species, he carries the heavy burden of the Collective, empty and alone.  Until one night he smells the sweetest aroma coming from a human woman, Claire. She is his soul mate and the missing part of his soul.  He is now whole, his soul has been returned to him.  This is Claire and Mikhail’s search for answers among a world filled with war and uncertainty.

Claire is a waitress and is better known as a hustler.  She's raised on the streets, abandon by her mother when she was only sixteen.  She doesn't trust easily and has developed a keen sense that allows her to read people’s intent.  Trying to make ends meet, she locks eyes with her newest victim and plans to seduce him in order to pick his pockets.  Little does she know that her life is about to drastically change! Mikhail is the king of his people, the dhampirs. Even though they have longevity and the ability to roam during sunlight hours it is not enough. The dhampirs are longing for his ascension to power and the end of waiting in stasis to be changed by their master.  Once Mikhail’s soul is returned to him, his power will be restored and he will be able to bring balance back to his people. He is ready to claim his queen and fulfill his destiny.

This story is incredible and the plot is well developed.  The characters are strong and even the secondary characters will hold you enthralled with the way the author introduces them.  There are several twists and kinks as the story moves along at a steady pace.  Without giving away anything, Claire and Mikhail form an alliance that is riveting and beautiful.  Even through the worst moments, their love is evident and strong. This isn't your typical happily ever after, but they do find each other and it’s a beautiful journey they take together.  I highly recommend you read this book and look forward to the next in the series.
