For Rhys McGowan, his nightmare began when he woke up, naked and hung-over, next to his bandmate’s little sister. Unable to remember a thing from the previous night, he only makes matters worse by lying to Allison about not being interested in her. The truth is he’s spent the last year to ignore his body’s reaction whenever Allison is around. His resolve is tested when Allison comes on tour with Runaway Train, as both Jake and Abby’s nanny and to fulfill her fashion design internship. The more time he spends with her in the close quarters of the bus, the harder it is for him to resist.
Will Rhys realize that having a relationship with Allison is worth fighting for even if it means that he has to fight his best friend for a chance?
Overall Rating: 4 Rockin’ ★★★★
Strings of the Heart is the third book in the Runaway Train series by Katie Ashley. The author continues to amaze me with her storytelling. I enjoyed the POV from both Rhys and Allison. It makes the book more enjoyable to read. You are able to share their feelings and understand what each character is going through.
Allison Slater, baby sister of Jake Slater, is a tough little cookie. She doesn’t back down from a confrontation. She has a potty mouth on her too. She can go from being nice to a raging bitch at the flip of a coin. At thirteen years old she fell in love with Rhys. She knew there would never be anyone else that could provoke such intense feelings like he did.
Rhys McGowan is the bassist in the band and has always known Allison to be off limits. He comes from a wealthy family and they do not see eye to eye about what he has done with his career. He cares deeply for his sister and bandmates…they are his true family. Rhys has feelings for Allison and he’s not sure what they mean. Could he actually desire her? Even though she has been like a little sister to him all these years?
“Allison laughed, causing my chest to have an odd clenching feeling.”
Allison is attending college in Savannah and is homesick for her family and friends. Rhys has returned to Savannah while the band is on break for a few weeks. Jake asks him to check on his sister. After spending time together, he realizes there is so much about her that he likes.
“…her sweetness, her smile, her sense of humor, her gentle, caring spirit, her artistic talent, and also her friendship. Without even trying, she’d found a way to break down my walls and strip my soul bare.”
Things get steamy one night after several shots of tequila. The couple find themselves sharing the night together. One scene in particular sticks out for me; when she describes him playing her like he plays the cello. Hello! That’s HOT! Alas, once Rhys wakes in the morning, he realizes the mistake he has made and rejects her completely.
“I’ll just try not to think each and every time I see you that you’re the man who didn’t just break my heart—you shattered it.”
Allison’s fashion design internship is with Runaway Train and she goes on tour with the band for the summer. She is also helping Jake and Abby with the twins by being their nanny. She knows that she will be around Rhys and she faces the facts that he doesn’t reciprocate her feelings. When Eli shows interest in Allison, she decides it’s time to move forward, and she accepts his invitation.
“The answer is yes. I would love to go on a date with you.”
Jake is very protective of his sister. No one is good enough for her. Rhys fears if Jake finds out about his feelings for Allison their friendship would be over. Will Rhys follow his heart and take a chance? Is Allison finished with Rhys for good? Does the couple get their happily ever after ending? You’ll have to read the book to find out! You won’t be disappointed.
