~Review: Duty Bound (The Protectors #1) by Samantha Chase~

I used to think I could be a hero, but one deadly night destroyed that delusion. So I’ve come home defeated. My military career, my best friend, my purpose—all of it is lost.

What I find is her.

She’s my best friend’s sister, and she’s everything I shouldn’t want. She’s on a hopeless quest for answers about her brother’s death, but those are secrets that can never come to light. She’s always been a fighter, and she desperately wants the truth.

I desperately want her.

Someone is trying to kill her now, and she won’t let me keep her safe. I have to do it anyway, even if she doesn’t trust me, even if she hates me for it. A man protects what’s precious to him, whether or not he can ever claim her for his own. So she becomes my purpose.

I’ll become a hero for her.

Overall Rating:  4 Rockin’ ★★★★

Levi and his best friend are on a mission together when Gavin is killed.  Their team returned scared and damaged and not just physically.  At Gavin’s funeral Levi is shocked to see how much his friend’s little sister has changed.  She is all grown up and still the girl that fought for the underdog and lead the battle against injustices.  The feelings that she evoked in Levi however were not of a little sister.

If it were another time-and another woman-I’d act on it.  But she was Gain’s little sister and therefore off limits.  Her eyes connected with mine over the crowd, and I felt like I’d been punched in the gut.

Harper does not have little sister feelings for her brother’s best friend and she is tired of him treating her like a sister.  She also wants answers about her brother’s death and what really happened.  No one is willing to talk with her and give her answers, not even Levi will come clean about what happened.  When things start to happen that indicated someone wants Harper to stop looking into her brother’s death, Levi goes into protector mode.  But Harper is not having any of his taking over and controlling her life.

I concluded that he probably meant well enough, but he was just as bossy as Gavin had always been, treating me like a child, like I couldn’t handle things on my own.  At least Gavin had the excuse of being my brother.  Levi had no justification for his bossiness at all.

Levi knows that Harper is in trouble and needs help but she just want stop pushing buttons to find out about her brother.  When she goes on TV with a public plea for answers things really start to heat up.  Levi has been home for two months working with his father in the family construction business.  He feels like he is a walking, talking time bomb and has a few theories of his own about what happened.  Levi is in denial about his feelings for Harper and she is also fighting how she feels about him.  Will they be able to move past Gavin’s death and find a lasting relationship? Or will Harper be targeted by those that want her to stop asking questions?  Will this be the start of something big?

“Are you worried about making enemies, Harper?” the reporter asked right before the camera panned back to her.  “Not at all.  If there’s nothing to hide and what they’re saying is true, then they have nothing to worry about.  All I’m asking for is the truth.”
